The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), currently in its 2.0 phase in 2026, is designed to provide clean cooking fuel to women from low-income households. While the original goal was just to provide a connection, the current version offers a completely "deposit-free" setup, including the first refill and a gas stove for free.
Here is how you can use the scheme to move from traditional fuels like wood or coal to LPG.
1. Latest Benefits (2026 Update)
If you are eligible, the government provides financial support of approximately ₹1,600 to cover the initial costs.
Free Connection: No security deposit for the cylinder or the pressure regulator.
Free First Refill: Your very first LPG cylinder (14.2 kg) is provided at no cost.
Free Gas Stove: A single-burner hotplate (stove) is provided for free by the Oil Marketing Company (OMC).
Ongoing Subsidy: As of 2026, Ujjwala beneficiaries receive a targeted subsidy of ₹300 per cylinder for up to 12 refills per year, credited directly to your bank account via DBT.
2. Who Can Apply? (Eligibility)
To use this support, the applicant must meet these criteria:
Women Only: The connection is issued only in the name of an adult woman (18+ years).
No Existing Connection: No one in your household should already have an LPG connection.
Eligible Categories: You must belong to a poor household or specific groups such as SC/ST, Most Backward Classes (MBC), Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) cardholders, forest dwellers, or people living on river islands.
Migrant Families: If you are a migrant worker, you can apply using a Self-Declaration as proof of address, rather than needing a formal local ration card.
